Lifelong Learners
We believe that every child has the ability to learn and should be recognised as a unique individual. This is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge and values. We celebrate and welcome differences within our school community. We recognise the need to develop and extend every child’s vocabulary. We recognise that poor vocabulary at 5 years old impacts on a child’s education and longer-term academic achievements. We know we need to improve the breadth and depth of vocabulary because we understand that this is the biggest factor in reading progress. Our aim is to ensure every child is exposed to a rich and varied vocabulary that is built on relevant and interesting experiences. We believe this to be an entitlement for every child and should not be based around a child’s academic ability.
We know that if children are unable to communicate and read this will impact on all areas of their learning and their ability to access the curriculum. We understand that children need to be good communicators and have access to quality reading opportunities for them to become good writers. These underpinning skills are essential for future success in life and an important part of early education in the Foundation Stage and across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
At Tibshelf Schools Federation, our sequenced curriculum is designed to recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand experiences, allow children to develop interpersonal skills and build resilience to become creative, critical thinkers. Our curriculum is skills based to enable teachers to plan for progression across the curriculum and develop meaningful cross curricular links that embrace topical local, national and global events as they occur. Teachers’ skills and strengths are recognised as educators who want to develop every child’s passion to learn by ensuring that what they are learning is relevant, sequenced and progressive.
Our curriculum embraces the community in which it is situated, recognising local history and geographical links and most importantly aiming to raise the aspirations of our children. The breadth of learning embraces the indoor and outdoor environment on the school site and in the local community. We work closely with the Infant School to ensure our curriculum is cohesive, building on prior learning and skills. We place strong emphasis on the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all our children and our school community has identified a clear set of values that underpin expectations for behaviour for all members of our school family.
We have agreed that we want the children at our school to be:
T – Tenacious, I – Imaginative, B – Brave, S – Skilful, H – Honest, E – Enthusiastic,
L – Lifelong Learners, F – Friendly
