Town End Junior School

Overview

The intention of the Geography Curriculum is to inspire children’s curiosity and interest to explore the world that we live in and its people, which aims to ignite a love of learning.

We intend to equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places, people and natural and human environments.

Through our teaching, we intend to provoke thought, questions and to encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it.

Geography
Town End Junior School

Intent
Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about
the world and the people that live in it. Children investigate a rage of places, both in Britain
and abroad, to hep develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and
human processes. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate
and make enquiries about their local area of Tibshelf, Derbyshire so that they can develop a
real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special.
We also develop the children’s ability to apply geographical skills to enable them to
confidently communicate their findings and geographical understanding to a range of
audiences.
Through high quality teaching, we develop the following essential characteristics of
geographers:

  • An excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like, both in Britain
    and the wider world
  • An understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected
  • An extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary
  • Fluency in geographical enquiry and the ability to reach clear conclusions and
    explain their findings
  • Excellent fieldwork skills
  • A genuine interest in the subject and a real sense of curiosity about the world and the
    people who live here

Implementation
In Geography pupils develop their knowledge of people and places to understand the
physical, social and economic forces which shape those places and the lifestyles of the
people who live there. We study local areas/issues and extend these studies into the wider
world. The children learn to use maps to locate cities, countries, mountain ranges, rivers,
seas and oceans. They use atlases, photos and the internet to explore the environment and
economics of those countries which they study. They then use the skills they have
developed in literacy, numeracy and ICT to report and record their findings.

Impact
Children will have developed the geographical knowledge and skills to help them explore,
navigate and understand the world around them and their place in it. Children’s knowledge
and skills will develop progressively as they move through the school, not only to enable
them to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, but to prepare them to become
competent geographers in secondary education.
