Tibshelf Infant & Nursery School

Intent

At Tibshelf Infant and Nursery School, it is our intent to provide all children with a high-quality PSHE education that supports them in becoming confident, healthy, and responsible members of society. We aim to equip children with the knowledge, understanding and emotional intelligence needed to lead fulfilling lives, build positive relationships, and make safe and informed choices in an ever-changing world.

Through our PSHE curriculum, children will learn about their mental and physical health, their rights and responsibilities, and how their actions affect themselves and others. We will nurture their understanding of diversity, respect and empathy, enabling them to celebrate difference and value equality. Children will be supported to develop self-awareness, resilience and strategies for managing challenges.

Implementation

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in PSHE, we implement a carefully planned curriculum that is progressive across all year groups. Our approach follows both the statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Health Education and the wider PSHE framework.

Early Years Foundation Stage

We recognise as a school that the guidance for RSE in the Primary phase links to several areas within the Early Years Framework, In Nursery and Reception, children will develop skills in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Personal, Social and Emotional, Understanding the World and Physical Development areas of learning.

The children are exposed to the intended learning experiences within the Jigsaw scheme through both direct teaching sessions and continuous provision.

Key Stage One

Children in Key Stage 1 receive weekly discreet JIGSAW lessons. We use the JIGSAW scheme of work to support continuity, ensuring coverage of key themes such as relationships, emotional well-being, safety, health and citizenship. Learning is also embedded through cross-curricular links, assemblies, circle times and whole-school initiatives.

Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners, drawing on real-life scenarios and age-appropriate discussions to develop understanding and empathy. Pupils are taught to develop the confidence to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe, respectful environment.

SMILERS

We are also proud to have started our journey with the Derbyshire County Council initiative SMILERS, promoting mental health and wellbeing in schools through practical daily actions for children and adults.

SMILERS is an acronym designed to help children and adults remember key actions to support their mental and emotional wellbeing. It is part of a whole-school approach in Derbyshire, launched in 2022, and is based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing framework for primary-aged children. The program emphasises that mental health is as important as physical health and affects learning, social interactions, and overall life satisfaction.

At Tibshelf Infant and Nursery School we acknowledge the link between our PSHE and RSE curriculums to our Physical Education curriculum through complimenting one another with extra-curricular events such as:

  • completing the Colour Run,
  • TCS London Mini Marathon
  • the Barnardos Big Toddle events.
  • opportunities to take part in a wide range of sporting activities within the local community
  • Mini First Aid for Y2
  • Resilience and building resilience adventure day for Y2 during the Autumn term.

Impact

We encourage our children to value and enjoy PSHE as an essential part of their personal development. Through reflection and discussion, pupils are supported in recognising how what they learn influences their choices, behaviour and relationships.

By the end of Key Stage 1, children will have developed a secure foundation in emotional literacy, social awareness and understanding of how to maintain their health and wellbeing. They will know how to show kindness, respect difference and keep themselves safe in a range of contexts.

Impact is measured through:

  • pupil voice and book look (with the use of a class floor book to support retrieval of key knowledge and discussions)
  • teacher observation, and ongoing assessment of children’s understanding, attitudes and behaviour.

The curriculum’s success is reflected in how children apply their learning across school life — showing empathy, respect, responsibility, and resilience. This is evident in the Behaviour and Attitudes across school.

Close collaboration between the Infant and Junior schools ensures smooth progression, with pupils leaving Key Stage 1 well-prepared to build upon their PSHE learning in Key Stage 2.
